The education system is supposed to be the engine of the new smart economy, which will lead us to a bright future of solving the world's problems such as cancer and global warming. Ireland is on the cusp, or so we're told, of being a genuine contender in the race to develop the latest technology. Worldwide, the Irish education system is generally regarded as being quite good, despite being horribly under-funded. In recent years the pressure of thousands of new students has started to strain the system. At present, many believe that the wheels seem to be coming off the educational bus.
