The Society Awards 2012 took place in the Radisson hotel on March 27th. A fabulous night was had by all congrats to all our winners and to all 470 who joined us for a night of fun. Thanks to all the special guests, out adjudicators and the performers; Paul Hanrahan Fire Juggling, Peter & Matthew Berill trumpet, piano and sax, The Sin n Tonics Choral Socs' accapella group under conductor Peter Mannion, Trad Soc, Radio Soc's DJ Darren O'Connor and Spanish guitarist Colm O'Rourke (Orchestra), special appearance by our very own Back Street Boys, plus our guest band Transmitter. The NUI Galway Gala Society Awards 2012 took place in the Radisson Blu Hotel on March 27th.It was an evening of entertainment and celebration for the extraordinary contribution Societies make to campus life and the wider community.This year they have organised almost 4000 events of educational, cultural, social and humanitarian value and have enhance the university experience for their fellow students while contributing to both the local community and the wider world. In the last eight years they have contributed over 1.5 million euro to charity. The 863 committee members have volunteered the equivalent working hours as 95 full time workers this year with a turnover of over one million euro which also makes their financial contribution to the local community significant. Speakers on the evening Deputy President An tOllamh Nollaig MacCongáill and Vice President for the Student Experience Dr Pat Morgan talked about the importance of Societies to campus life and praised all the student present for their hard work and the good example they set for their fellow students. Riona Hughes, Societies officer and the team in the SocsBox were also praised for their support and dedication to societies who in NUI Galway have support and facilities second to none in the third level sector. .
The recipients of the awards on the evening were as follows. The Business society who have had an extraordinary year picked up 3 awards, 'Best Society', 'Best On Line Presence' and 'Best Large Publication' for their Business review, Paul Curley, the Society Chairperson and incoming SU president in his acceptance speech spoke about the vital contribution societies make to students personal development. The Drama Society also scooped three awards: Best Poster, Best Photo for Paul O'Mahony and Best Fresher for Christopher Moran. Best individual went to Lily McGarry conductor of the choral Society. Most Improved Society went to the Engineering Society who reinvented themselves this year in conjunction with the opening of the new Engineering Building in addition to a packed programme of events they are sending over 30 students to Zambia with Habitat for Humanity.Best Society Event went to the Music & Ents Society and Rock Soc for their band competition Witless..Best new society went to Lotus Society who have made yoga widely accessible to the student population. Best Civic Contribution went to Feminist Society,a new society who has made its presence felt on campus this year with a packed programme and some great awareness raising events. Best Academic Society went to Physics Society, Most Soccesful Society went to the Musical Society for their contribution to campus life, The Phoenix award went to An Cumann Craic, Best Multimedia went to Michael Talty and Film Society for their work on s:tv|Galway, Best Cultural Contribution went to Traditional Music Society, Two awards for publications went to Cumann Soisialta from the Acadamh for their Nuachtlitir an Acadaimh and Chess & Go Socs for their monthly publication Knight’s Atari. The Muscailt Awards for contribution to the University Arts Week from the Arts Office went to the Musical Society, Photo Soc and Comic Book Society. The society to receive the ALIVE award for volunteering went to Dramsoc.
Special Achievement Awards on the evening also went to the following: Laura Donnelly (Musical Society), Chemistry Soc, Thor Mc Veigh, (Organiser of Witless), Timothy Morrow (Lit & Deb Society), Sean Burke (Accountancy and Finance Society) Robyn Allen for his contribution to numerous societies, Lisa Grant (Art and Fansci Societies), Ronan Gallagher (Dramsoc), Classics Soc, FLAC Soc (Free Legal Advice Centre), Michael Slevin (French & Biz Soc), International Students Society, The ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award went to Séagh MacSiúrdain and the Society Outstanding Achievement Award for his organisation of the Euro Debates last August went to Nollaig O’Scannlain.
Entertainment on the evening was provided Peter & Matthew Berrill, trumpet and Piano and Spanish guitarist Colm O'Rourke all from the Orchestra Society and recipients of a Society bursary for performance. The Sin n Tonics Choral Socs' accapella group under conductor Peter Mannion also performance bursary winners performed pop songs with their own special twist. They were joined on the night by performances from Juggling Soc, Trad Soc and Radio Soc's plus a special appearance by our very own NUIG 'Back Street Boys, whos video on YouTube has been a sensation raising €10,000 for charity Our winner will be representing us at the BICS National Awards which take place in Johnstown House Hotel on April 12th best of luck to our entrants.
