The BICS (Board of Irish College Societies) national Society Awards were held recently in Johnstown House Hotel in Enfield. Seventeen Third Level Colleges from the Island of Ireland came together to celebrate the achievements of students involved in Society organisation at the highest level. Keynote speaker Simon Carswell, author, finance correspondent with The Irish Times and ex society member from his student days in TCD and DIT, in his inspirational speech highlighted the importance of involvement in societies for personal development, career opportunities and future contacts. Over 300 students and 44 adjudicators were in attendance at the gala occasion when 16 awards were presented in nine categories to both large and small colleges. Seven Colleges were competing in the large categories and of the nine awards NUIG won four. It was certanly NUIG's night as the scooped up more awards than any other college in attendance. Since its inauguration in 1999 NUI Galway has won more national society awards than any other college in Ireland and tops the leader boaed at 30 trophies, the next compeditor stands at 22. This year NUI Galway Feminist Society won best Civic Contribution for their outstanding work during the year highlighting violence against women, established just one year they have also taken the NUIG campus by storm with the variety and quality of their events. The award for Best Society Individual was won by, NUIG Arts Policy and Practice student, Lily McGarry for her dedication as conductor to the Choral society in NUIG and her all round volunteering spirit, under her baton the choral society experienced a dramatic revival culmination in major success at the Limerick Choral festival plus numerous intersociety musical collaborations. Lily this year has also won an NUI Galway Performance Bursary to attend a choral conducting summer school. Best Society Fresher in Ireland went to Christopher Moran, 1st year BA Connect theatre and performance student, for his contribution to Dramsoc, the Musical Society and the Writers Society. Christopher has been involved in numerous productions during the year and very involved in promoting creative writing. He also won two awards at the Jerome Hynes One Act Play series as part of NUI Galway Theatre week; Judges choice as best newcomer for his play "Laugheter is the best Medicine' and he was part of the cast of the play which won audience choice. NUIG's final award of the evening was scooped up for Best Poster, designed by Matt Burke, student of the BA sa Chumarsáid in the Acadamh for his beautiful poster for Dramsoc's production of Hamlet. The other winners in the Large Categories were DCU: Best On Line Presence for their Media Society and Best New Society for the Raise and Give Society, Queens University won Best Society Event for their SWOT Fashion Show. UL won most improved society for Out in UL. UCC won best Society for their LGBT Society. In the small College Categories NCI won 3 awards Best individual, Katie Donohue, Best New Society NCItv and best Event, Boardroom Challenge, Mary Immaculate College Limerick won the award for best Civic Contribution for their One World Society. DkIT won best Society for their Media Society and were joint winners of Best Fresher, Rachel Maher. ITT Dublin also won best Fresher for Laura O’Dowd. NUI Maynooth Anthropology Society won Most Improved Society. According to NUI Galway Societies Officer and BICS Executive member, Riona Hughes, 'the two day event was a major success, it was all about celebration, all of the societies who attended had achieved a very hgih standard in their own institutions, the judges were very impressed and had two very long days of deliberation which included interviews with all the nominees. The BICS Awards are the highlight of the Societies calendar and afford them a fantastic opportunity to network and share ideas, we expect great things from them all next year.
