Young Fine Gael NUI Galway is an active political society here on campus. Why not join us and be part of one of the largest and most active branches in the country!
Young Fine Gael, the Young United Irelanders, is an Irish Nationalist Youth Movement that pledges allegiance and fidelity to the Irish Republic. The party derives its inspiration and endeavor from this bedrock. Young Fine Gael is an autonomous yet integral part of the Fine Gael party. It seeks to advance the political representation and objectives of the youth of Ireland through the vehicle of the Fine Gael Party. Young Fine Gael is wholly committed to the development of young people at all levels of political life, and in communion with the Fine Gael Party seeks to maximise the electoral objectives of Fine Gael.
Fine Gael first established a presence on this campus in 1973 at the time of the Liam Cosgrave-led Fine Gael/Labour Coalition government. The President and Leader of Fine Gael, Enda Kenny T.D., - then an Arts student at the University - was one of the founding members of the branch. Another founding member was Madelainne Taylor-Quinn, a former member of both Dail Eireann and Seanad Eireann and a present-day member of Clare County Council.
NUIG YFG proudly boasts in excess of 3,000 members and is presently that largest and most active political movement on campus. Young Fine Gael meets every week on campus and regularly attracts attendances of 35-40 people. Highlights of the academic year just (sadly!) ended included the visits of Leader of Fine Gael Enda Kenny TD, Dr. Leo Varadkar TD, Charlie Flanagan TD, Richard Bruton TD, Simon Coveney TD and Local Galway TD Padraic Mc Cormack.
YFG is an organisation with a network of thousands of members nationwide, and an unrivalled programme of social events, weekends away and nights out. So as well as an opportunity to voice your opinion on the issues that matter to you, you get a packed social life into the bargain!

Young Fine Gael NUI Galway are converned with the level of unemployment seen to date in the state. The Government seem to be content in sitting on their hands as the country goes deeper and deeper into the abyss. The consequences for young graduates and young people seeking work, should be a top priority for this Governement. We support Fine Gael's stimulus plan to get Ireland Working Again. It is clear that this rudderless Government have no mandate left to Govern and have lost the trust of the people.
Never in the history of the State have so many people been out of work, Fine Gael Enterprise Spokesman Leo Varadkar TD said today as the live register climbed by 13,300 in the last month.
“At the end of last year the Government was trumpeting a slowdown in the number of people joining the live register. Fianna Fáil has successfully thrown this into reverse, with the live register accelerating dramatically back to five figure job losses per month. The increase of 13,341 in the month is a dead cat bounce for unemployment levels. Without the pressure valves of emigration and further education, the live register would now stand at half a million.
“Every job loss is a tragedy for the individual and their family. And this is a tragedy which Brian Cowen has personally presided over. There were 202,000 on the live register when Brian Cowen became Taoiseach. This has more than doubled to almost 437,000 under his tenure.
“The thousands of people losing their jobs and livelihoods won’t take any comfort from Government delusions that the worst is over, particularly when tax revenues continue to plummet and redundancies are soaring.
“Not only is Fianna Fáil deluding itself by talking up a recovery, it has failed to take the right steps to bring about job creation. Fine Gael, however, has put job creation at the heart of its economic plans: an SME survival plan to bring about real reform and reduce costs, a jobs tax cut to give a break to businesses and their 1.7 million employees, a stimulus plan to create 100,000 new jobs while investing in essential infrastructure for future job growth, and a dedicated package of policies targeting the 85,900 young people on the live register.
“This is in stark contrast to Fianna Fáil’s misguided determination to continue bailing out banks like Anglo Irish with billions of euros of taxpayers’ money.”
Young Fine Gael NUIG will be running a campaign in February to highlight Young Fine Gael and Fine Gael's solution to GET YOU WORKING AGAIN.
