" Germany, 1989: Alex lives with his sister Ariane and his mother Christiane in East Berlin. His father fled to the West in 1978, apparently abandoning the family. In his absence, Christiane has become an ardent idealist and supporter of the ruling Socialist Unity Party of Germany. When she sees Alex being arrested in an anti-government demonstration, she suffers a near-fatal heart attack and falls into a coma.
Shortly afterward, the Berlin Wall falls. After 8 months, Christiane awakes, but her doctor asserts that any shock might cause another, possibly fatal, heart attack. Alex realizes that the discovery of the end of GDR would be too much for her to bear, and so sets out to maintain the illusion that things are as before in the German Democratic Republic. Alex and Ariane wear their old-fashioned Eastern clothes, feed Christiane new Western produce from old-labeled jars and they even create fake reports on TV, played from a video machine hidden in an adjacent room. One day, Christiane sees all her neighbours' old furniture piled up in the street for garbage collection and advertisements for Western corporations?
The movie was made in 2004 and was a big success in Germany."

In a new development for the society we are going to start showing films and television series based on or around historical events. Our first series that we will be watching is "Band of Brothers". The narrative centers on the experiences of E Company ("Easy Company"). The series covers Easy's basic training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, the American airborne landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Siege of Bastogne and on to the end of the war, including the taking of the Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's Eagle's Nest). The events portrayed are based on Ambrose's research and recorded interviews with Easy Company veterans. A large amount of literary license was taken with the episodes, with several differences between recorded history and the film version.

Volunteers are needed for litter monitoring/pick up on Tues 25th or Wed 26th for a 1-2 hour period. This will help us determine the litter black spots on campus, so these can be targeted to ensure we maintain a litter free campus, in so far as possible and will help in our efforts to earn the Green Flag for NUI Galway. Many hands make light work and your work will be rewarded with a draw for all volunteers helping out. It is hoped that staff and students will play their part in helping develop a greener campus.
